USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) scientists conducted a helicopter overflight of the June 27th lava flow today. The flow was fully inspected but the rainy weather prevented production of a complete map. At the time of the flight, scattered breakouts continued to be observed immediately upslope of the stalled flow tip but breakout activity was significantly reduced farther upslope in the area west of Kaohe Homesteads, the area north of Puʻu Kahaualeʻa, and on the north flank of Puʻu ʻŌʻō. The reduction in upslope activity was possibly due to recent 5-day-long deflation of the summit.
