This is not intended as an admonishment as nobody has done anything wrong here.
However, it has been a long time since I clarified our policy on what our threshold is for posting about fires here on CD.
This group attempts to focus on disasters in California and we hold to that for the most part.
Fires that cause damage or injury or significantly threaten to do so are fair game to mention here. This includes fires with the potential to cause or for which evacuations have actually been discussed or ordered.
We add the additional factor of significant sized fires so that a particularly large fire burning out in the middle of nowhere is fair game due to its large size and thus large effect on the wildlands even if direct human effects are minimal. Such fires will have significant indirect societal impacts.
However, there are many great groups on Yahoo devoted to fires which list includes, SoCalFire, CenCalFire, NorCalFire, Southern-California-Fire-Notifications, BayFire, BayScan (a.k.a. FlameScan), CaliforniaOnlineScanning, SoCalScan, ScanningCenCal, ScanNorCal, and a host of more minor and generally dead groups tailored to smaller areas like particular counties (Santa Clara Co. is one) or regions (the High Desert is one).
Every fire that breaks out and is going to run for a bit at minimum is welcome to be posted on those groups (they don't appreciate every little quarter-acre road-side spot being posted however).
I DO NOT want this group's purpose to drift into the niche occupied by those groups as they have their function and we have our function and the two are not the same.
Please use these guidelines regarding posting about fires and if you have any additional questions please feel free to ask the management off-list.
