Rick Tobin | 2012 weather impacts you may not have considered
Posted by Hal Newman on Big Medicine Blog on Mar 6, 2012 in Rick TobinMost of us who've been through enough seasons of rough weather that we could be aged by our rings, like trees, are not surprised by the recent horrific tornado strikes and intense storms. However, for those of you with a more urban experience, and less natural-events scar tissue, let me apprise you of some impacts this year's weather may bring to your neighborhood that you weren't expecting.
Warm-water conditions in the Gulf of Mexico are clear indicators that this could be the year for massive storm activities throughout the Central, Southern and Eastern U.S. The tornado season is just part of that. The hurricane season could be the second blow.
If the intensities continue, and move across additional areas as the growing season progresses, there could be impacts far beyond the immediacy of threats to human life and safety, and the infrastructure losses.
We are about to go into the growing season for much of the country's croplands. There are already major losses in place from the severe drought conditions in the West and Southwest that have endured for five or more years.
