This afternoon at about this time in 1985 an automobile sparked a fire that would go on to burn for over a week and scorch 74,640 acres and burn 12 homes. At one point it would jump the Salinas Reservoirs/Santa Margarita Lake en route to running up into the Los Padres National Forest. It forced US101 to be closed for multiple days and a 7,000+ acre firing operation to be conducted to keep it from jumping the freeway to the west. This same area would be 9 years later in the Highway 41 but that fire would successfully jump US101 from the west to the east On the 8th, pushed by strong down-slope winds in the wee hours of the morning it would make a major run at the eastern margins of the City and San Luis Obispo forcing firefighters to house-to-house fight it in resident's backyards.
