INTRO: The U-S Forest Service is asking and warning private and commercial drone operators to stay away from wildland firefighting efforts. The U-S-D-A's Bob Ellison has more. (1:05)
NARRATOR: Drones can be a danger to wildland firefighters. In the last few weeks the presence of private or commercial drones grounded firefighting aircraft six times. A drone event in Southern California was very costly.
Jami Anzalone, U.S. Forest Service, Program Manager: And in that particular one of the aircraft was shut down for just under an hour and during that time frame the fire behavior kicked up and structures were lost.
NARRATOR: Anzalone (ann-zuh-loan) says drones, or unmanned aircraft systems, can endanger firefighters, aircraft and fire-threatened communities.
Jami Anzalone, U.S. Forest Service, Program Manager: Safety depends on what aircraft are out there as well as where those aircraft are operating, so when an unauthorized u-a-s or drone comes in to the air space it can really pose a risk.
NARRATOR: Drone operators who interfere with firefighting efforts can face severe penalties.Jami Anzalone, U.S. Forest Service, Program Manager: We have had instances of commercial operators who were trying to take footage and then make money off of it and so in those instances the F-A-A comes down even harder.
NARRATOR: There are also Forest Service and state penalties for drone operators who interfere with firefighting efforts. For the U-S Department of Agriculture, I'm Bob Ellison.
