A magnitude-6.4 earthquake hit the southern Taiwan city of Tainan just before 4 a.m. Saturday, toppling buildings and leaving several people dead and hundreds of others injured. The tremors from the quake were felt in the capital, Taipei, which is about 180 miles north of the quake's epicenter.

Facebook activated its "Safety Check" feature Saturday, allowing the site's users in the area to declare themselves as safe on their profiles.

In a post on his verified Facebook page, NBA basketball star Jeremy Lin, who was born in the U.S. to Taiwanese parents, said: "Please pray for the people who are affected by the earthquake in Tainan."
