El Nino-Fueled Storm Triggers Surf, Lightning Warnings

By Samantha Tatro and NBC 7 Staff

Several storm warnings and advisories were in effect early Monday as a powerful El Nino-fueled storm arrived along the San Diego County coastline.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued at 6:35 a.m. for the Oceanside, northern San Diego County area. A line of dangerous thunderstorms was approaching the Southern California coastline bringing with it the potential for damaging winds, hail and heavy rain.
"A squall line is made up of intense thunderstorms capable of producing rotation or water spouts," NBC 7's Meteorologist Jodi Kodesh said. "It's headed our way."
A high surf warning was in effect from noon Monday to 4 p.m. Tuesday. High tide arrives around 7:30 a.m. so coastal flooding is possible in some low-lying roadways. The National Weather Service warns of strong rip currents and potentially damaging high surf.
Beach lightning was possible until 10 a.m.
An airport weather warning was in effect until 9:30 a.m. meaning there is potential of cloud to ground lightning and strong winds at Lindbergh Field.
This strong storm system will produce snow at the 5,500-foot level in the morning with the snow level lowering to around 4,500-feet by Monday night.
"We could see anywhere from eight inches to a foot of new snow," Kodesh said.
