Kim,
It's hard for me to believe that some people would leave this group, because
it wasn't entertaining enough. What the heck were they thinking when they
joined anyway? The group does what it is supposed to do, disseminate facts
for those who need, or want to know... and that's all. It does a wonderful
service for those who fit either category. You have done a wonderful thing
to set it up, and I know you didn't send this email out for a pat on the
back, but just know, those of us in the group, appreciate the fact that in a
disaster, we can see what's going on from those who are there. It's a great
group, as is the earth quake group also.
Jim

I have been contemplating posting this message for quite some time now.
Today is a sick day for me so I finally have the time to do it.

California Disasters has been rather quiet for some time now. Some of our
long-term members have left in recent months apparently because they are
bored with how unexciting things are here compared to how they were a few to
several years ago.

Let me make one thing perfectly clear: we are in a lull in disasters in
California and we should be thankful and hope it lasts as long as possible.
However, I wouldn't hold your breath on that latter part. Our relative
seismic quiessence won't last nor will this year be another quiet year for
wildfire as all factors are aligning themselves for a frightful fire season,
a season that never really ended this Winter and is now ramping up as Spring
approaches. There was a 3-acre wildfire not 10 miles from my house a few
hours ago in an area of oak woodland that should not be burning this time of
year.

The point of this message is to warn you, our membership, to not get lulled
into complacency over the relative calm of late. Nor do I wish this group to
be viewed as disaster entertainment with a responsibility to provide
excitement. I have on occasion received feedback from members who left who
seemed to indicate we weren't interesting enough. That is not our purpose
and disasters are not fun and games.

I have also received a myriad of feedbacks over the years from
newly-departed former members complaining about all the messages they
receive. This is pettiness and laziness as this group is not designed to be
quiet any more than it is designed to be loud and exciting. This group
reflects what is actually going on which is what it is supposed to be doing.
If one feels they are getting too many messages then that is fine; they need
to go adjust their message settings on their group membership page. That is
not the moderating team's job unless somebody expressly requests it because
they can't understand how to do it themselves.

Due to my changing lifestyle of more work and more school I don't have as
much free time as I once did and thus I do not send out as many membership
invites nor do I hastle as much with getting "bouncing" member's accounts
"unbounced". If you wish to receive messages from this group and are not
then check your membership settings page and make sure you are not bouncing.
If you are it will show that there and fixing it is a click away from
completion.

I appreciate everybody who has stuck with us over the years since May, 2007
when this group flashed into existence and I assure you it is my intention
to continue this project as long as I live (I'm 41, almost 42 so hopefully
we have some more years here together) even if I transfer out of state to
attend university and/or career afterwards takes me elsewhere.

As always I invite and welcome more participation from our members provided
it follows what we are trying to accomplish here and how we are trying to do
it.

Again, thanks to all who are here now and even those who were once with us
but whom have left. We should have an interesting 2012 together!
