Thursday's Class 5A Girls semis: It's Down to Hawks, Eagles
By Ken Sickenger / Journal Staff Writer on Mar. 8, 2012
RIO RANCHO Anyone for a rubber match?
Top-seeded Eldorado and No. 2 Volcano Vista will settle the debate about which is the state's best Class 5A girls basketball team in Saturday's 4 p.m. championship game at the Pit.
The Eagles held off Hobbs in Thursday's semifinals at the Santa Ana Star Center, and Volcano Vista pulled away for a 61-49 victory over Clovis.
It's a much-anticipated matchup, as the teams handed each another their lone loss this season.
"We've been thinking about playing Eldorado again all season," said the Hawks' Ashley Williams. "Can't wait."
The Hawks (27-1) advanced to the school's first basketball championship game by winning their 14th straight game. Eldorado (27-1) was runner-up in 2010 but last won a state title in 1995, the end of Don Flanagan's coaching era at the school.
No. 3 VOLCANO VISTA 61, No. 2 CLOVIS 49: Defense won it for the Hawks, who scrambled the Wildcats into 25 turnovers and converted many of them into points.
"That's been our bread and butter all season long," VVHS coach Lisa Villareal said. "These girls are relentless. I can't take the press off or they'll chew me out."
Both teams pressed throughout the game, leading to numerous break-away baskets and extended scoring runs. The Hawks soared to a 16-point lead in the first half, saw Clovis cut the margin to one, then pulled away again in the closing minutes.
But with the exception of the third quarter, Volcano Vista had the upper hand. Emma Fenske was a force for the Hawks, scoring 23 points and coming up with five steals.
"Give Volcano Vista credit; they got after us," Clovis coach Jeff Reed. "But I felt like we shot ourselves in the foot, too. We just seemed overwhelmed."
Such was certainly the case in the first quarter, when the Wildcats turned the ball over nine times. Fenske and Schylar Malone combined for 13 points as the Hawks raced to a 22-10 lead.
The lead twice ballooned to 16 points in the second quarter, when Williams scored 10 points and was 6-of-10 from the foul line.
"Ten free throws in a quarter?" Williams said. "That's my record."
Williams ended up with 13 points, and Malone added 10 for the Hawks. Paige Gardner paced the Wildcats with 16 points.

No. 1 ELDORADO 51, No. 5 HOBBS 48: In what could only be described as a sloppy affair, Eldorado put together a key 8-0 run in the fourth quarter and held on to edge Hobbs.
Eldorado led for most of the first half but could not open a comfortable lead. Two late jumpers by Gemma Biasetto helped the Golden Eagles lead 16-13 after on quarter. Each team scored nine points in a turnover-filled second quarter.
Hobbs (19-12) stayed close behind some strong post play by Halle Woods. Woods scored twice inside as Hobbs finished the third quarter on a 6-0 run and claimed a 36-34 lead.
But Regina Okoye, who scored 21 points, imposed her will midway through the fourth quarter. The senior scored on a drive to the basket, followed that with a steal and converted a three-point play for team a 43-39 lead.
Biasetto added a three-point play to make it 46-39, Eldorado's largest lead, with 2:50 left. EHS then began working the clock, forcing Hobbs to foul, and made just enough free throws to seal the win.
