"The "King Fire" did as it pleased on Wednesday. Efforts to establish retardant lines and any other lines of defense failed. Time after time today the fire burned through established retardant lines, fire pushed by strong winds has now established itself in the Rubican River drainage. On the North flank fire is now burning in the Brush Creek ,Lookout Mtn and Jaybird Canyon. Fire is now reported burning North of Stumpy Meadows Reservoir as well. Poor humidity recovery over night on Tuesday helped the fire burn strong all night long. On Wednesday the fire established a pyro cumulus cap that remained throughout the day and was still capped out after sundown. The Pyro Cumulus was reported over 30,000 feet high at times during the day on Wednesday (9-17) and was visible as far away as Red Bluff, Sacramento, Auburn, Reno,Minden. Fire continues too do what it wants to do as it continues burning towards the North,Northwest,Northeast,East. 2,700 homes remain threatened from the fire, the only good news is if the Eastern head can be stopped then most of the fire will continue to burn into more remote areas (Pino Grande and Uncle Toms Cabin could eventually be threatened but there is lots of land between the fire and those communities for now). Heavy thick smoke continue to choke cities and towns North,Northeast of the fire. Fire has now destroyed 27,930 acres and is expected to again burn hot and heavy throughout the night, officials are saying that another 8,000-10,000 acres could burn overnight."
