Earthquake Damaged Dam
This photo shows an oblique aerial view of the Lower Van Norman Dam, overlooking the heavily populated San Fernando Valley. It was taken after the February 9, 1971, San Fernando Earthquake and demonstrates the vulnerability of the modern urban society to the damaging effects of a nearby earthquake. The dam was damaged nearly to catastrophic failure when part of the hydraulic-fill embankment and the concrete lining slid into the reservoir. About 80,000 people living downstream from the dam had to be evacuated as a precautionary measure. Photo by J. I. Ziony. Los Angeles County, California. 1971.
