YUCAIPA: Coroner officials on scene of fatal bus crash

Coroner's officials were still searching the wreckage of a tour bus Monday morning that killed at least eight people and injured dozens more north of Yucaipa.

The mangled bus remained parked on Highway 38, just north of Bryant Street, leaving a trail of destruction in its path.

California Highway Patrol officers said the bus was still too unsafe to board in order to retrieve two remaining bodies.

The tally of those on board is still unclear. CHP officials believe it's somewhere between 35 and 43 people injured, though they do not have a passenger list of how many people were on board, CHP Officer Mario Lopez said.

Authorities also do not know how many people were in the pickup or the Saturn, the other vehicles involved in the crash.

None of those killed have been identified and many family members of the dead or injured have been notified. Once the bus is deemed secure, CHP officials planned to search the bus for personal belongings and other identification.

A CHP Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team and coroner's officials combed the scene, officials picked up children's backpacks and other belongings strewn across the road.

A flattened blue pickup truck remained in the road, along with a black Saturn that the bus rear-ended.

Authorities are still not clear what caused the crash or how it happened. The CHP will examine the bus and reports of brake failure or other mechanical malfunctions.

CHP officials had not determined what caused the bus to lose control or sent it hurtling into the pickup. It's unknown if the pickup was going north or south.

The driver of the bus was hospitalized and interviewed by authorities, who are also investigating possible driver error.
