Time: | 6:00 am - 6:00 am (GMT-08.00) Pacific Time (US & Canada)
Location: | Santa Barbara/San Luis Obispo County Line
Notes: | In the predawn hours this morning in 1998 following yet another epic El Nino rain dumping storm which was in a sequence of such storms going back to the night of February 2-3, 1998, the Cuyama River was transformed into a raging torrentand at a bend in river where it pointed into Highway 166 which parallels it for much of its length it ate into the road and its supporting rip-rap and washed it out. This unfortunate fact was unknown to both a lone motorist as well as two CHP officers who in the darkness drove out into the void and fell down into the roiling waters of the the flooding Cuyama River where they three died. A fourth man, a truck driver, followed the other three men into the dark, cold, turbid waters but somehow managed to survived.
