One should be reminded that scanners are common, LE knows this and MIS-informational broadcasts are yet one more tool in the box. (Don't always believe what you hear.). Cell phones are your friend, on scene.
Some digital scrambling radios offer the only secure LE communications on scene, if available. Not only are they illegal in the US to unscramble, they're tough to hack and the 'key' can be changed over the air in moments (making the hacker restart).
While drifting off topic, the only way this dirtbag could have listened in was if he had stolen the correct portable radio, which LE would have noticed. LE would presume he had a scanner, perhaps TV access. Nothing beats a face to face meeting for secure informative exchanges, everything else is suspect.
If only the news media had shown some innate intelligence (kept their mouths under control, cameras on wide shots), it might have ended better for all. They became part of the situation which is inexcusable.
LE will be there for weeks Joann but the radio traffic will die down. Thanks for your reports.
