Some of them are not as bright as they seem to think they are (like many other folks). ;o) Airing specific locations of personnel is only one example.
Our standard questions if they wanted to go into a hot zone were: “Did you leave us accurate information so we can notify your next of kin?” and “Do you understand that we are NOT going to attempt any rescue of you if you enter?” These were usually effective to cause them to reconsider.
They can go anywhere on scene they want, no restrictions, but sometimes you had to give them enough information so it wasn’t an informed suicide. The law allows it, but does not mention common sense or a functional brain.
No, my general opinion of reporters is not very high.

I started to say I couldn't believe it when I heard one of the media reps moaning and complaining about this, as if the safety of responders and civilians is less important than their stories. Then I corrected myself -- unfortunately their attitudes make me more steamed than surprised.
