How about getting a ham radio license and using it. Then invest in some good amateur radio gear, a generator and/or solar power plant, and you can communicate not only during a disaster but have a fun hobby the rest of the time too. I remember being in the middle of a storm one time and the Red Cross had these 800 MHZ trunking radios ... and the things were USELESS when the power to the repeaters and towers went out. Ham radio really helped out that time!
