SAN PEDRO - Dozens of Los Angeles Firefighters responded by ground and air on Friday afternoon to battle a wind whipped wildfire that damaged 2 homes and several outbuildings near Bandini Canyon Park.
The Los Angeles Fire Department was summoned at 5:04 PM on April 17, 2015 to the 700 block of West Oliver Street in north central San Pedro, where crews arrived quickly to find burning vegetation in a barrance that had spread to nearby homes and other structures.
With dried grass, palm trees and more than one structure ablaze - and embers driven by a northwest wind gusting to 22 miles-per-hour, first arriving firefighters commenced a well-coordinated assault with handlines to anchor the flames, as more LAFD resources were requested.
With Fire Department helicopters en route for aerial reconnaissance and command support, the ground-based crews battled fast moving fire that heavily damaged a 2 story residential duplex, caused lesser damage to the roof of a 2 story home and damaged or destroyed four outbuildings, including a detached garage and sheds.
One hundred thirty-three firefighters under the command of Deputy Chief Joseph Castro labored against the wind to protect scores of homes. They fully extinguished the flames in just 49 minutes.
There proved no need for formal evacuation, and no injuries were reported. Disaster Action Team volunteers from the American Red Cross assisted two displaced residents. Total fire loss to is still being tabulated, while the cause of this major emergency blaze remains under active investigation.
