2015: A severe thunderstorm struck near Mecca, producing a copious amount of
lightning and very strong, damaging winds, including a brief EF1 tornado.
Over 100 power poles were damaged or destroyed.
A car was flipped.

1998:
It was 112° F in Victorville, the highest temperature on record for August.
This also occurred the next day on 8.7 and on 8.14.2002.

1997: A major heat wave started on 8.2 and ended on 8.7.
Temperatures hit 121° F in Thermal, 118° F in Borrego Springs, 113° F in Brea, 110° F in Riverside and Ontario, and 101° F in Julian.
The low temperature was 93° F in Palm Springs on 8.5.
5 deaths were attributed to this heat wave.
On this day a funnel cloud was reported in Pine Valley.

1992: A F0 tornado touched down on the north end of the 
Nevada Test Site (just east of the CA-NV border).

1983: Saint Helena had a high temperature of 109° F.

1983: The high temperature at Reno, NV, was 105° F .

1950: It was 42° F in Riverside, the lowest temperature on record for August.
