Orange County's worst wildfires

November 2008: The Freeway Complex Fire, likely caused by vehicle exhaust equipment, burns more than 30,000 acres and destroyed 190 residential structures, including homes.

October-November 2007: The Santiago Fire burns 28,517 acres and destroys 14 residential structures after being started by an arsonist at Santiago Canyon Road and Silverado Canyon Road. It was one of about 30 wildfires in the state.

February 2006: The Sierra fire, started by a controlled fire-prevention burn, gets out of control and takes six days to control, forcing the evacuation of 1,200 homes in Anaheim Hills and Orange. There is no property damage and no major injuries.

August 2001: A quick moving brush fire in the Trafalgar Canyon of San Clemente burns five acres, destroying five condominiums and damaging two others, causing $2.5 million in damage.

October 1996: A fire destroys 10 homes in North Tustin and damages 19 others. Four firefighters are injured.

October 1993: The Stage Coach Fire blackens 750 acres, destroying two homes and damaging 29 in east Anaheim and Villa Park.

The Laguna Beach fire burned 16,000 acres and destroyed more than 300 homes.

June 1990: An arsonist in Carbon Canyon burns 6,600 acres and damages or destroys 14 homes.

October 1982: The Gypsum Canyon fire, caused by a downed power line, burns nearly 17,000 acres and destroys 14 luxury homes in the Villa Park-Anaheim Hills area.

January 1976: A fire in San Clemente, started by a spark from welding equipment, chars 2,560 acres and does $1 million in damage. Fifteen houses are destroyed, and 66 damaged. A dozen firefighters are injured.

October 1967: The Paseo Grande fire, possibly started by equestrians and fanned by 50-mph winds, scorches 50,000 acres. It damages or destroys 66 homes valued collectively at more than $2.5 million in the Lemon Heights-Santa Ana Canyon-Cowan Heights area. One woman is killed, and nine people, including four firefighters, are injured.
