Angeles Crest Highway will likely be closed until spring due to rain damage

The stretch of Angeles Crest Highway north of La Cañada Flintridge is likely to remain shuttered until spring because December storms have destabilized some of the hillsides above the roadway, according to the California Department of Transportation.
Of particular concern is the Brown's Canyon area, about two miles east of the entry point to the Angeles National Forest, where Caltrans has already been working to repair a hillside pass that crumbled away during storms a year ago.
December rains dumped new mud and rocks onto that portion of the roadway, and officials are concerned more debris could come down unless the hillside is stabilized.
"This was a rockslide area exacerbated by the heavy rains. We're working to remove a [potential] rockslide issue there by taking out a large section of the hill," Caltrans spokesman Patrick Chandler said. "We're looking at keeping the road closed until spring."
