Re: [Geology2] Vestigial digit gives Creationism the finger

Hi Allison. Yeah certainly from that point of view it did the trick, lol.  Just a shame it wasn't really relevant to the story it conveyed!

(But I suppose that such things are journalistic tricks of the trade, i.e. getting attention beats accuracy!).

Mark.

I will tell you one thing.. if this title was designed to get everyone's attention, it certainly did the job. There sure has been a lot of discussion. lol.. allison

Hi Lin.

Yeah a problem with the 'net' is that folks can add in bits and pieces to try to establish  ulterior motives. It might be best to always 'google' any headline, as I've found that there is often a few versions of certain articles.

I agree, Mark. You don't take a scientific discovery and use it to to be rude or to support your personal beliefs. I found another version of this article yesterday and wished that I had waited and submitted that one. At least it didn't try to assert the reporter's self importance and snobbery over another person's choice of theories. And therein lies the rub: that choice belongs to everyone.

Yeah it does feel like it is a constant war re:evolution/creation.  Not that the article was really related to this anyhow. The title was inappropriate to the discovery.

I feel people just like jumping on the band waggon kind of thing and any new evidence is seen as disproving the others argument(s).

Some more sophisticated minds would recognize that there is no Contradiction.

The reality is that if we ever figure out what specifically happened we will realize that mainstream interpretations of the Bible were in error and that Evolutionary Theory needed a good deal of revising and filling in its gaps ergo, nobody at present really knows what the hell actually happened and a good deal less dogma from both groups would be refreshing and constructive.

Hi all.

I reckon that the article is trying to convey evidence of a vestigial structure, thus contradicting Creationism.

But really the headline is unnecessary as it doesn't go into enough detail to justify itself.  It was probably a ploy to attract attention, and a nice play on words. However, the finding is interesting anyhow and would have stood on its own without the headline.
