Spotter and Skywarn News
Our Skywarn group participated in Skywarn Recognition Day held on 4 December, 2010. Skywarn Recognition Day was developed in 1999 by the NWS and the American Radio Re-lay League. It celebrates the contributions that volunteer Skywarn radio operators make to the NWS. During the day Skywarn ham radio operators visited our office and con-tacted radio operators across the world.
Skywarn, along with our Meteorologist in Charge, Jim Purpura, and our new Warning Coordination Meteorologist, Alex Tardy, will be laying plans for future improvements during meetings this winter.
La NiƱa may have taken charge in January, but our wet season is still only half over. During the storms so far this season, we have received more frequent and timely snowfall reports, something we are always starving for. Remember that timeliness counts! We'd rather have some information as it happens, than a full report hours later (the full report is great too!). Reports from spotters and Skywarn provided essential and useful information to help us forecasters make some pretty big decisions. All the feedback from emergency management, volunteers, NWS management, and the general public has been positive on the NWS support to protect life and property. You help us fulfill that mission! Keep up the good work.
