Dear colleagues,

You may be interested in a recent eruption at the Erta Ale volcano (21st - 23rd Nov), witnessed by scientists from the Afar Rift Consortium Project. A full report can be found on the website at
http://www.see.leeds.ac.uk/afar/new-afar/home-page-assets/Observations_from_Erta_Ale.pdf. Further information about the work of the Afar Consortium, and the 2012 conference in Addis Ababa can be found at: http://www.see.leeds.ac.uk/afar/

Summary

Erta Ale volcano, Afar, Ethiopia 13.60o N, 40.67o E; Summit elevation 613 m

Between the 21st - 23rd Nov, scientists from the Afar Rift Consortium Project were at the Erta Ale lava lake. The lake, located in the southern sink, was erupting with Strombolian activity and active lava flows. The lava has now infilled the sink breaching the western rim, and two flows have entered the main crater. The lava lake is now encompassed by a scoria ring which is ~ 4m high on the southern side. By the 23rd Nov, the lake was above eye level when standing the main crater.

Best regards

Lorraine Field
