Notes: | Early this evening in 2003 a lost hunter started a signal fire which a short time later powerful Santa Ana Winds drove 30 miles in 16.5 hour for an average burn rate of 5,000 acres per hour. This fire went on to be the largest fire in California up to that time at 280,278 acres. This fire consumed 2,820 structures, of which 2,232 were homes in communities as far ranging as Ramona, Poway, Miramar, Scripps Ranch, and Julian. 15 people were killed including a firefighter. | |
