For all of the years that I lived in California, this is the only time I had to pack up the valuables in the car in case we were given the order to get out. I was living in La Costa (just outside Carlsbad) at the time and watched the smoke rise and get darker on the drive home. I made it home before the area was closed off (my wife wasn't allowed anywhere near the area when she got off work a 9pm).
After packing up I joined a couple dozen of my neighbors on a ridgeline a couple blocks away to watch the fire as it came towards us. Fortunately the winds had died down and it stayed far enough away from us that we didn't have to leave.
