[Volcano_Vista_HS] APS Bond Election--Please Vote Tuesday, February 5, 2013!

The Albuquerque Public School District has an estimated $5 billion invested in infrastructure. It would be pennywise and pound foolish not to maintain that investment, and much of the $168 million in mill levy funding as well as $200 million in general obligation bonds on Tuesday's ballot will pay for electrical, drainage, floor, sewer, cooling and other work to keep the district's schools running.

The average age of an APS school is 40 to 50 years old, and it is important that repairs, remodeling and reconstruction continue to ensure equity and adequacy at its campuses. APS has done a much better job being accountable for capital funding in recent years, matching revenues to projects while removing politics from the equation by requiring all work follow the district's master plan.

While taxing entities, including APS in this election, are quick to point out a yes vote "will not increase your taxes," it is important to make the distinction that a yes vote will not increase tax rates — which are one piece of an equation that also includes fluctuating property valuations.
