For those who are not aware, when the jumbled ones (batteries of any size) make contact of positive to negative whether accidental or placed that way, they will be discharging to some degree. That's why when you buy battery packages they are all neatly organized with the positives in one direction.
When breaking up bulk packages please do not divy up the individual units and throw them loosely in a drawer or in an emergency kit. They should be stored with all the positives pointed in one direction and the negatives in another, and secured in boxes or bags and/or taped so they can't roll around. They will stay fresh much longer and also are less prone to developing leaks of battery acid.
The battery acid issue is not funny -- it can do a lot of damage. Just recently I was teaching an introductory course in search and rescue for a business client where the client is required, as a condition of the my providing the training, to already have their gear and supplies and to have checked them to make sure all were organized and in operating order. The guy in charge of checking the gear had assured me before the training all was well. The day of the training they went to pull stuff out and many of their supplies had been damaged from battery acid leaks - probably exacerbated by storage in an uninsulated and hot emergency bin. They got that this was a costly mistake because of all the stuff they now need to replace, but I'm not sure the guy with the red face (who clearly had NOT checked the condition of the gear) understands that this could have been much worse --- it could have left them incapable of responding safely in a real emergency.

My entire life I have done what this guy did that burned his home but have gotten by with it to this point but will start taping my 9V's.. and not just the dead soldiers but the unused ones all jumbled together.
