SANTA BARBARA – UPDATE: 50 to 75 acres are burning and 100 homes are threatened due to a large brush fire is burning off Highway 154 at Painted Cave, the site of a devastating wildfire back in June of 1990.

A mandatory evacuation is ordered for residents in the Painted Cave area. An evacuation area has been established at The Wake Center.

The "Lookout" fire broke out on a large hillside just before 8:00 am Wednesday morning. Santa Barbara City and County fire and search and rescue fire copter has been deployed.

According to scanner traffic, fire officials are referring to this as the "Lookout Fire." It is unknown how many acres have burned thus far, and how many homes or structures are threatened.

The Sky Tracker Weather Center forecast calls for temperatures in the upper 90s in the San Marcos Pass area. Winds are expected to turn southeast at six to 12 miles per hour.

Both directions of Highway 154 have re-opened but county roads in the area including Painted Cave remain closed just north of Santa Barbara in the San Marcos Pass area. Expect slow traffic in the area. Motorists are advised to use Highway 101 as an alternate route in and out of Santa Barbara.
