Re: [californiadisasters] 1999 Hector Mines/Lavic Lake Quake, 10/16/2012, 2:45 am

hahaha..I got out of bed real quick and went for safety....it was a good one to feel, and heard the church bells with that one pretty good, it felt the same way as Landers, knew it was out toward that direction. I do recall right before that quake that there wasnt too many quakes going on days prior to the quake, it was real quiet in quake land.

I'm still pissed off that my husband held me on the bed because he thought I was going to run. I mean, if you heard someone shouting out, Woo-hoo! and Yeah, baby! at the sound of the first explosive boom, would you think they were going to run? All I wanted to do was to surf it out on my two feet. Wouldn't have hurt a thing. Yeah. Yeah. I know. Not supposed to do that, but it was my first large quake.

Reminder from:   californiadisasters Yahoo! Group

Title:   1999 Hector Mines/Lavic Lake Quake

Date:   Tuesday October 16, 2012
Time:   2:45 am - 2:45 am
Location:   Mojave Desert - San Bernardino County
Notes:   In the wee hours of this morning in 1999, a major earthquake rocked the Mojave Desert of Southern California and from there the entirety of the rest of the Southland as well as parts of Nevada and Arizona.
The epicenter of the quake was located about 50 miles east-southeast of Barstow, CA.
The quake was caused by a bilateral rupture mostly along the Lavic Lake Fault but a little bit on the Bullion Fault, too, for a total of about 40 kilometers.
There was surface fault rupture but fortunately the area where this occurred was in a lightly populated area and entirely contained within the Twenty-Nine Palms Marine Corps Base.
Two notable incidents of damage were the derailment of a westbound AMTRACK Southwest Chief that was traveling near the epicenter at the time of the quake as well as heavy damage to the National Jeep Trails (Old Route 66) overpass of Interstate 40 near Pisgah Crater between Newberry Springs, CA, and Ludlow, CA.
