I agree. Even a surtseyan eruption takes time to build an island. That raft of pumice is normal for such an event, but the island did not just pop up before anyone's eyes and voila! there it was. There are a couple of images that detail a phreomagmatic eruption and although dramatic, such island building blows off more than it collects in one spot, extending the time taken to build the island.

Heck, I'd be happy just to see a vent blow a smoke ring. :-)

I believe this is a hoax combing photos from two separate accounts.

Look at the sequence carefully. The type of photos differ, the sea differs etc.

I remember the original story of the vast area of floating pumice in the S Pacific and how scientists from different governments figured out the under water volcanic source using military assets diverted to the area not a yacht.
