(08-24) 14:02 PDT NAPA -- Most of the windows were blown out at the air traffic control tower at the Napa County Airport, but the structure was spared major damage and flights continued after a magnitude 6.1 earthquake rocked the county early Sunday morning, officials said.
The tower at the small regional airport south of the city of Napa will be unusable for several weeks while replacement windows are manufactured and installed, said Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.
In the meantime, the airport will operate as it typically does at night when the tower is closed, with pilots using a uniform radio frequency to communicate with each other and broadcast their positions, Gregor said.
Officials were working to set up a temporary tower of the type used during air shows and wildfires, Gregor said.
