Hot, dry weather fanned the flames of several large fires across California this week. While crews appeared to have success taming the Courtney Fire and Bolles Fire, the vicious King Fire continued to grow outside Sacramento.By Saturday, the King Fire had grown to more than 80,000 acres and was threatening as many as 12,000 homes, according to CalFire. The agency said more than 3,800 fire personnel were part of the fight.

The fires come at what's traditionally seen as the peak of the state's wildfire season, but it's been a painful year already. USA Today reports more than 4,800 fires sprang to life in California so far in 2014 – 1,000 more than an average fire season.
Hundreds, if not thousands of families have been impacted, and the photos above barely scratch the surface of the high cost of wildfires.
