SAN CLEMENTE – Four of six homes bordering an almost vertical 25- to 50-foot slope failure were red-tagged, or declared uninhabitable, Friday afternoon, with city officials telling the occupants they could remove belongings but not stay overnight. "We're trying to work with the residents to allow them to get things out," said Bill Cameron, city engineer.
The slide occurred Thursday evening behind six hillside homes along the 200 block of Via Cascadita in San Clemente's Shorecliffs community, bordering Shorecliffs Golf Course.
Roshy Gill, who was staying with her parents Thursday night, said the slide occurred at about 6 p.m. Thursday, but the darkness prevented residents from seeing the extent of the damage.
"It was pretty dark last night and we didn't see the damage," Gill said. "We saw it this morning, and we were scared."
The slide left a steep vertical drop within ten feet of the red-tagged homes.
Gill said the slide took with it a large swath of land behind her parents' home, including trees and shrubs that are now at the bottom of the hill.
Firefighters with the Orange County Fire Authority were called to Via Ballena at 10:18 a.m. on Friday, said Capt. Greg McKeown.<SNIP>
