The short version?  Folks didn't like cold hard impersonal facts; it required them to think and form independent opinions on their own.  They got dumbed down.  They preferred to be spoon fed but foofy haired pretty folks.

I was taught in journalism classes that "hard news" didn't involve opinions, politiking, etc. Whatever happened to that, or has hard news died ????
