Re: [californiadisasters] Is there a fire in Acton?

Unlikely.  The winds have been from the south the last 4-5 days.  WIth the high pressure centered over AZ, it's a LONG way around the block for NorCal smoke to hit SoCal.

The local news has shown the plume pattern too, it mostly went north, some snuck over the hill to Reno-ish and a bit went west but not as far as the bay area.

My best guess would be smoke from some of the San Diego area fires (and typical summer crud) over the last couple days being 'caught' in the valley (a low bowl).  One good blast of wind will push it into Nevada (insert snarky comment here like, "who cares?).  :o)  The fog can snag some of it too, washing the air, if the marine influence moves in that far.

I get your concerns, I was through there a couple years ago when the Angeles (up hiway 2?) was burning (a forest with NO trees, huh?) and the smoke over Pasadena etc was so dense, you could have paved it.  Pretty nasty stuff.

However, no matter what the source, if you are of a 'sensitive' group (COPD [includes asthma], allergies or just older) you should avoid the smoke.  The particulates are extremely fine which allows them to go deeper into the alveoli (the actual air sacs inside the lungs) which triggers an episode.  For the rest of us, it just ain't good.

Since the Sand fire was only a dozen miles away, I had to shut the house down for a couple night (best time to cool it off).  PG&E sent me a love note this morning in thanks (more air conditioning too, about double my normal bill).

A whole house fan will suck it INTO the house, bad idea.  A properly set up HVAC (heater, ventilator, air conditioner) will only bring in about 20% outside air as 'fresh'.  Not perfect, but better.

To me, it still smells like overtime. but I sure don't miss charging up the hills with 60 lb or more packs.  :0)

Candy,

You are getting smoke from the Southern and Central Sierra wildfires.
