Re: [Geology2] What Happens When a Hurricane Meets a Volcano?

Don't know which one nor where but someone gave a convincing paper that an single instance of a hurricane/typhoon triggering a pregnant volcano to erupt when the eye crossed the volcanic island.  Seems this hurricane was an unusually low pressure and the change in the ground pressure was enough for the shallow magma chamber to hit the tipping point.  Eruption was eminent anyway based on the dynamics of that particular volcano.

There was a counter issue raised that the down poor and mud-ash run off was the real culprit.  Enough of the overburden was removed that the down pressure on the magma chamber was relieved beyond the tipping point.  I think the later was more likely in some see-saw of rain going to groundwater which pushed down then up as it trailed off down slope.  Hey it is a better Hollywood disaster plot than " The Day After Tomorrow" ever was.
