Add a few drops of household bleach before sealing for a little extra protection. Again, A FEW DROPS for 5 gallons of city water. It WILL flavor the water, but you can counter that with a little vinegar added in before drinking. That's an RV'ers trick (1/4 cup of bleach for 30 gallon tanks; let it soak a day to sterilize; flush; refill; a half cup of vinegar to neutralize). Yes, that's two acids and salts.
Pool chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) in the sun rapidly breaks down into sodium chloride (table salt). Ask any pool owner; they are supposed to replace 1/3 of the pool water every year.
Frankly it's easiest and cheaper (~$3.50/case) to just get a few cases of water (per person) at Costco or WalMart; then use and add them back in rotation.
A year of storage is dicey; store bought or not.
My personal shelter plan is my RV (good for a couple weeks off grid; I keep it ready always) but I'm a little light on ammunition. ;-) I need to improve on that.

I would suggest changing your stored water once a year but confess I don't even follow my own advice on this with my own cache of 6 5-gallon jugs having not been changed in several years... gotta get on that methinks!
