[Geology2] How Turtles Got Their Shells: Fossil of Extinct South African Reptile Provides Clues

The skeleton of the South African reptile Eunotosaurus africanus fills a gap in the early evolution of turtles and their enigmatic shell. (Credit: Tyler Lyson)

How Turtles Got Their Shells: Fossil of Extinct South African Reptile Provides Clues

May 30, 2013 — Through careful study of an ancient ancestor of modern turtles, researchers now have a clearer picture of how the turtles' most unusual shell came to be. The findings, reported on May 30 in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, help to fill a 30- to 55-million-year gap in the turtle fossil record through study of an extinct South African reptile known as Eunotosaurus.

"The turtle shell is a complex structure whose initial transformations started over 260 million years ago in the Permian period," says Tyler Lyson of Yale University and the Smithsonian. "Like other complex structures, the shell evolved over millions of years and was gradually modified into its present-day shape."

The turtle shell isn't really just one thing -- it is made up of approximately 50 bones. Turtles are the only animals that form a shell through the fusion of ribs and vertebrae. In all other animals, shells are formed from bony scales on the surface; they don't stick their bones on the outsides of their bodies.

"The reason, I think, that more animals don't form a shell via the broadening and eventually suturing together of the ribs is that the ribs of mammals and lizards are used to help ventilate the lungs," Lyson says. "If you incorporate your ribs into a protective shell, then you have to find a new way to breathe!" Turtles have done just that, with the help of a muscular sling.

Until recently, the oldest known fossil turtles, dating back about 215 million years, had fully developed shells, making it hard to see the sequence of evolutionary events that produced them. That changed in 2008 with the discovery of Chinese Odontochelys semitestacea, a reptile about 220 million years old, which had a fully developed plastron -- the belly side of the shell -- but only a partial carapace on its back.

Eunotosaurus takes the turtle and its shell back another 40 million years or so. It had nine broadened ribs found only in turtles. And like turtles, it lacked the intercostal muscles running between its ribs. But Eunotosaurus didn't have other features common to Odontochelys and turtles, including broad spines on their vertebrae.

Lyson says he and his colleagues now plan to investigate various other aspects of turtles' respiratory systems, which allow them to manage with their ribs locked up into a protective outer shell. "It is clear that this novel lung ventilation mechanism evolved in tandem with the origin of the turtle shell," he says.

[Geology2] Pacaya volcano erupts in Guatemala

Pacaya volcano erupts in Guatemala

  • AAP
  • May 31, 2013

GUATEMALA'S Pacaya volcano has erupted, sending volcanic material more than 400 metres in the air, authorities say.

The Institute of Vulcanology warned that the eruption could intensify with ash rising as high as 1000 to 2000 metres, posing a threat to air traffic at Guatemala's international airport.

"Ash could spread over Guatemala City due to the direction of the wind," the country's disaster response office said in a statement.

The last major eruption of Pacaya, in May 2010, claimed the life of a television journalist, drove thousands of people from their homes and forced the closure of the Guatemala City airport for five days.

The 2552 metre-high Pacaya is 50 kilometres south of the capital and one of three active volcanoes in Guatemala.

[californiadisasters] California Senate Approves Padilla Bill to Create Earthquake Early Warning System

California Senate Approves Padilla Bill to Create Earthquake Early Warning System

Posted: Thursday, May 30, 2013

The California State Senate earlier this week approved Senate Bill 135 by Senator Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima) on a bipartisan vote of 39 to 0. The bill would require the development of a comprehensive statewide earthquake early warning alert system in California. The measure now goes to the Assembly for consideration.

"A fully developed earthquake early warning alert system would provide Californians critical seconds to take cover, assist loved ones, or pull over safely to the side of the road. It could allow time to stop a train and power down other critical infrastructure," said Senator Alex Padilla. "We all know a big quake will hit again in the future. We should be smart and use our science and technology to detect seismic activity and alert people in advance of destructive shaking," Padilla added.

About 90% of the world's earthquakes and over 80% of the world's strongest quakes occur along the Pacific Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire includes the very active San Andreas Fault zone here in California. For example, last week there was a 5.7 earthquake in Northern California, an 8.2 earthquake in Russia, a 7.4 earthquake in Tonga and a 6.8 earthquake off the coast of Chile. Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, Turkey, Romania, Italy and China either have or are working on earthquake early warning systems.

Specifically, SB 135 would direct the Office of Emergency Services, in collaboration with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), the California Geological Survey, the University of California Berkeley, the United States Geological Survey, and others, to develop a comprehensive statewide earthquake early warning alert system in California. The initial cost estimate for the system is $80 million.

"An earthquake early warning would speed the response of critical public safety personnel by quickly identifying areas hardest hit by a quake," Padilla said. "California is going to have an earthquake early warning system, the question is whether we have one before or after the next big quake," added Padilla.

In January, the California Institute of Technology and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology published a study concluding for the first time that a statewide California earthquake involving both the Los Angeles and San Francisco metropolitan areas may be possible. The Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast released in 2008 predicted a 99.7 percent likelihood of a magnitude 6.7 earthquake in California in the next 30 years and a 94% chance of a magnitude 7.0.

California presently has a demonstration earthquake early warning system called the California Integrated Seismic Network (CISN). SB 135 would fully develop this system, which would process data from an array of sensors throughout the state, detect the strength and the progression of an earthquake, alert the public within seconds and provide up to 60 seconds advanced warning before potentially damaging ground shaking is felt. The beta-system worked successfully several weeks ago, providing a 30 second warning to seismologists of a 4.7 magnitude temblor centered in the Riverside County desert.

Japan's earthquake early warning system provided the public with critical advanced warning of the 9.0 magnitude Tohoku earthquake in March 2011. Earthquake warnings were automatically broadcast on television and radio, and 52 million people received the warning on their smartphones. Millions more downloaded the early warning app after the quake to receive warnings in advance of large aftershocks. The system brought bullet trains to a stop, and triggered the automatic shutdown of operations at critical companies. A professor at the University of Sendai received a text message of the warning and was able to warn his students to duck for cover before the shaking began and the light fixtures fell from the ceiling.

NASA's GRAIL Mission Solves Mystery of Moon's Surface Gravity

PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory
(GRAIL) mission has uncovered the origin of massive invisible regions
that make the moon's gravity uneven, a phenomenon that affects the
operations of lunar-orbiting spacecraft.

Because of GRAIL's findings, spacecraft on missions to other celestial
bodies can navigate with greater precision in the future.

GRAIL's twin spacecraft studied the internal structure and composition
of the moon in unprecedented detail for nine months. They pinpointed the
locations of large, dense regions called mass concentrations, or
mascons, which are characterized by strong gravitational pull. Mascons
lurk beneath the lunar surface and cannot be seen by normal optical
cameras.

GRAIL scientists found the mascons by combining the gravity data from
GRAIL with sophisticated computer models of large asteroid impacts and
known detail about the geologic evolution of the impact craters. The
findings are published in the May 30 edition of the journal Science.

"GRAIL data confirm that lunar mascons were generated when large
asteroids or comets impacted the ancient moon, when its interior was
much hotter than it is now," said Jay Melosh, a GRAIL co-investigator at
Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., and lead author of the paper.
"We believe the data from GRAIL show how the moon's light crust and
dense mantle combined with the shock of a large impact to create the
distinctive pattern of density anomalies that we recognize as mascons."

The origin of lunar mascons has been a mystery in planetary science
since their discovery in 1968 by a team at NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Researchers generally agree mascons
resulted from ancient impacts billions of years ago. It was not clear
until now how much of the unseen excess mass resulted from lava filling
the crater or iron-rich mantle upwelling to the crust.

On a map of the moon's gravity field, a mascon appears in a target
pattern. The bulls-eye has a gravity surplus. It is surrounded by a ring
with a gravity deficit. A ring with a gravity surplus surrounds the
bulls-eye and the inner ring. This pattern arises as a natural
consequence of crater excavation, collapse and cooling following an
impact. The increase in density and gravitational pull at a mascon's
bulls-eye is caused by lunar material melted from the heat of a long-ago
asteroid impact.

"Knowing about mascons means we finally are beginning to understand the
geologic consequences of large impacts," Melosh said. "Our planet
suffered similar impacts in its distant past, and understanding mascons
may teach us more about the ancient Earth, perhaps about how plate
tectonics got started and what created the first ore deposits."

This new understanding of lunar mascons also is expected to influence
knowledge of planetary geology well beyond that of Earth and our nearest
celestial neighbor.

"Mascons also have been identified in association with impact basins on
Mars and Mercury," said GRAIL principal investigator Maria Zuber of the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. "Understanding them
on the moon tells us how the largest impacts modified early planetary
crusts."

Launched as GRAIL A and GRAIL B in September 2011, the probes, renamed
Ebb and Flow, operated in a nearly circular orbit near the poles of the
moon at an altitude of about 34 miles (55 kilometers) until their
mission ended in December 2012. The distance between the twin probes
changed slightly as they flew over areas of greater and lesser gravity
caused by visible features, such as mountains and craters, and by masses
hidden beneath the lunar surface.

JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena,
Calif. managed GRAIL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in
Washington. The mission was part of the Discovery Program managed at
NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. NASA's Goddard
Space Flight Center, in Greenbelt, Md., manages the Lunar Reconnaissance
Orbiter. Operations of the spacecraft's laser altimeter, which provided
supporting data used in this investigation, is led by the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology in Cambridge. Lockheed Martin Space Systems in
Denver built GRAIL.
