The 10-inch crack was found during a routine inspection at about 3 p.m. Wednesday, said Caltrans spokesman Bob Haus. The cause of the crack is under investigation.
The far-right westbound lane was closed during the inspection, and after the crack was found on the underside of the flat portion of the bridge, Caltrans kept that lane closed, Haus said.
The crack was found on a wishbone-shaped steel beam that was part of the seismic retrofit of the span in 2001. It's part of the system that allows the bridge to move from side to side during an earthquake and is connected to some of the girders that support the roadway, Haus said.
