San Bruno blast mystery deepens

The 30-inch PG&E transmission line that burst Sept. 9 showed no signs of extensive corrosion, according to findings in a National Transportation Safety Board preliminary report released Wednesday. And although the line came apart while under higher pressure than usual, federal investigators said that difference was slight.
Experts who reviewed the preliminary report for The Chronicle said it did not suggest a cause of the blast. But what it makes clear, the experts said, is that PG&E should move cautiously until more is known.
Today, that very issue will be before the California Public Utilities Commission.
