Everyone should be very careful when looking at Jim Berkland's "earthquake predictions". I've heard a couple of his predictions. His models are set up so that he can claim he predicted any large earthquake. He says the big ones always happen within a week of a full or new moon, particularly when they coincide with perigee. That covers the entire month. And the predictions are not specific - somewhere in the Pacific region, somewhere on earth. The Sendai earthquake occurred a week before perigee, but it occurred on the first quarter, as far as you can get from a full or a new moon. He still claims success for predictin a "big one". Jim Berkland, who predicted the Loma Prieta quake, which occurred in the Bay Area in 1989, has done work with the gravitational force of the moon and how that can trigger quakes. |
