A magnitude 6.3 earthquake off the coast of Baja, Mexico, shook some in Orange County early Friday morning.
The quake struck 163 miles south-southwest of Avalon, on Santa Catalina Island, at 2:36 a.m., likely occurring on a shallow fault in the Pacific plate, the U.S. Geological Survey said.That area has not seen a quake over magnitude 6 in 40 years, the agency said.
The quake was reported felt in Aliso Viejo, Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Dana Point, Foothill Ranch, Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Irvine, La Habra, Ladera Ranch, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Newport Beach, Orange, Placentia, Santa Ana, Trabuco Canyon, Tustin, Westminster and Yorba Linda.
It was also felt in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
