What's new: Highway 18 reopened

A 4.6 earthquake near Big Bear Lake prompted the temporary closure of Highway 18 in both directions from Snow Valley to Big Bear Dam Saturday, July 5, officials said.

The highway was closed immediately after the 9:59 a.m. quake and reopened about 11:45 a.m.

No damage was reported from the tremor and two smaller quakes within a two-minute period, said Tim Franke, a supervisor for the San Bernardino County fire dispatch center.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the initial quake rattled six miles west of Big Bear Lake at 9:59 a.m., with two subsequent quakes of 3.4 and 2.7 in the same area.

The shaking caused rocks and debris to fall on Highway 18 leading into the Big Bear area, said Shelli Lombardo, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Transportation.

After the road is cleared, the pavement and guardrails must be inspected, she said.

She said she didn't know when the road would reopen.

Motorists heading to Big Bear can take Highway 38, while Highway 18 is open for people going to Lake Arrowhead, Lombardo said.
