My understanding is they were Christianized Native Americans associated with New Tribes Mission. I was unaware of those other tragedies: how awful! I looked this story up last night and did some more digging and found the title of that book and was unaware he had written such a book... something I must add to my library.

The volunteer firefighters were not Native American. The were volunteers from a evangelical Christian Mission called The New Tribes Mission.  The early 50's were deadly for them, 15 killed in a plane crash in June 1950, followed by another plane crash that November killing 21, including the founder. Then this fire followed 3 years later. The story of the fire is also in one of John Norman Maclean's book "Fire and Ashes"
