If it were extreme heat, it would never have been built. There is no evidence of significant change in the geyser/pool network (other than the pools are lower than a decade ago) as mentioned previously (snow, trees) so this is filed (by me) as sensationalism.
More than likely is the Forest Sircus either did the (crappy) paving themselves (spilled bags of patching material then walked away) or hired an/other unqualified low bid outfit to do the patching. Because Heaven knows, it's been many decades since a real paving job was done on that road and they won't spend the dollars to do it right. ;o)
Patching a patched road means it's patched, a temporary solution at best. It doesn't mean it's intended to last a long time.

Maybe the extreme heat is what the park would get it they told the real story that a snow plow dug this up. Not that I care but it would not be the first "false flag" excuse offered. Note that the snow is not melted, the trees are alive and green and there is grass under the snow. This kind of refutes the notion that the damage was caused by "geothermal activity in the area". Next we will hear that is it an alien emergency landing to fix an overheated star drive, or that it was Bush's fault. There was a day when Park Rangers were true blue and knowledgable. Under today's advance or be fired personnel model There are lots of airheads in the PR positions and an increasing number of rangers who are anti public openly hostile. Some tourist would try the patience of Job but it is their obligation to inform and do so politely. But I digress. I think this is based on a misunderstood Park press release and them picked up by a bloggster to draw attention to his blog. Either way I doubt this has anything to do with changes in the geothermometry of the Park.Eman
