I think hardly a week has gone by in the last 15 months in which I didn't
hear first-hand or second-hand of someone getting their email cracked. It's
rampant. Even one of our mods got hit.
But this domain registration thing is new, and these bozos are flat-out
asking you to send them money.
Bottom line:
Prevention: Trust nobody.
Have a strong password and guard it (and a different password for each thing
is good; if they get your email, you don't want them to also get your bank
account).
Don't believe anything you get in email, not even from a friend (at least
until you know it's really your friend writing).
