| Notes: | In the wee hours of this morning in 1999, a major earthquake rocked the Mojave Desert of Southern California and from there the entirety of the rest of the Southland as well as parts of Nevada and Arizona. The epicenter of the quake was located about 50 miles east-southeast of Barstow, CA. The quake was caused by a bilateral rupture mostly along the Lavic Lake Fault but a little bit on the Bullion Fault, too, for a total of about 40 kilometers. There was surface fault rupture but fortunately the area where this occurred was in a lightly populated area and entirely contained within the Twenty-Nine Palms Marine Corps Base. Two notable incidents of damage were the derailment of a westbound AMTRACK Southwest Chief that was traveling near the epicenter at the time of the quake as well as heavy damage to the National Jeep Trails (Old Route 66) overpass of Interstate 40 near Pisgah Crater between Newberry Springs, CA, and Ludlow, CA. | |
