Not only does the southwest have a strong Mexican and Spanish influence, there is also strong Native American influence. I've had friends originally from the mid-west who knew how to pronounce Gila but not Havasu. Gila is pronounced HE la and Havasu is pronounced just like it's spelled. Makes for some very confused people.
