A ham license is easy to get these days and with some really cheap (Chinese) import radios, very affordable. 

Sat phones are grossly overpriced; don't work everywhere (trees, canyons, indoors) and a righteous solar flare (or earth based nuke/laser) can slag the satellite itself. 

The best communication plan is broad based (LOTS of options) and is not dependent on a single power source.
