This morning in 1996 strong Santa Ana Winds drove a small fire started alongside the south side of US101 as a result of downed powerlines over 13,000 acres to the sea. As a result, 6 homes were destroyed and various parts of Malibu and Calabasas and isolated communities in the Santa Monica Mnts. as well as Pepperdine University were threatened. Damage and additional fire spread were limited by the Old Topanga Burn area adjacent to the east as well as fuel mitigation efforts prompted by that fire as well as the less populated nature of the burn area in comparison to previous and later fires in the Santa Monica Mountains.
